How to Submit Your Website to Baidu Search Engine
If you want your website to be visible to the 1+ billion internet users in China, getting indexed by Baidu is non-negotiable. Baidu dominates the Chinese search market with over 60% market share — making it the Google of China. But submitting your site to Baidu isn't as straightforward as other search engines. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Baidu Matters
China has the world's largest online population, and Baidu is their primary gateway to the internet. If your business targets Chinese consumers, B2B partners, or tourists — Baidu visibility is critical. Unlike Google, Baidu has its own ecosystem, rules, and requirements that you need to follow.
Step 1: Create a Baidu Webmaster Account
Before you can submit your site, you need to register for Baidu Webmaster Tools (Baidu Zhanzhang, 百度站长平台) at ziyuan.baidu.com.
Account Requirements
Here's where it gets tricky. Baidu has strict registration requirements:
- Chinese Phone Number: You need a mainland Chinese mobile number for SMS verification. International numbers are generally not accepted.
- Baidu Account: You must create a Baidu account (百度账号), which requires the Chinese phone number above.
- Real-Name Verification: Baidu may require identity verification (实名认证) — either a Chinese national ID or a Chinese business license.
- Chinese Business License (for corporate accounts): If you're registering as a business, you'll need a valid Chinese business registration certificate (营业执照).
This is the biggest hurdle for international companies. Without a Chinese entity or a local partner, getting past this step can be extremely difficult.
Step 2: Verify Your Website
Once you have your Baidu Webmaster account, you need to verify ownership of your domain. Baidu offers three verification methods:
- HTML File Upload: Download a verification file from Baidu and upload it to your website's root directory. This is the most common method.
- HTML Meta Tag: Add a specific meta tag to your site's
<head>section. - CNAME Verification: Add a CNAME record to your domain's DNS settings.
We recommend the HTML file method — it's the most reliable and doesn't require code changes on your site.
Step 3: Submit Your Sitemap
After verification, submit your XML sitemap through the Baidu Webmaster dashboard:
- Navigate to Site Management → Link Submit (链接提交)
- Choose Sitemap as the submission method
- Enter your sitemap URL (e.g.,
https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) - Submit and wait for Baidu's crawlers to process it
Baidu also supports:
- Manual URL Submission: Submit individual URLs directly
- API Push: Programmatically push new URLs to Baidu in real-time using their API
- Automatic Push: Add a JavaScript snippet to your pages that notifies Baidu when a page is visited
Step 4: Optimize for Baidu SEO
Baidu's ranking algorithm differs from Google's in several important ways:
- Prefer Chinese-language content: Baidu heavily favors Simplified Chinese content. If your site is in English only, your chances of ranking are slim.
- Meta tags matter more: Unlike Google, Baidu still places significant weight on meta keywords and descriptions.
- Hosting in China helps: Websites hosted on Chinese servers (with an ICP license) load faster and rank higher on Baidu.
- Avoid heavy JavaScript: Baidu's crawler historically struggles with JavaScript-rendered content. Server-side rendering (SSR) is strongly recommended.
- Backlinks from Chinese sites: Links from
.cndomains and Chinese platforms carry significantly more weight than international backlinks.
Common Challenges for International Companies
- The phone number barrier: Without a Chinese phone number, you simply cannot create a Baidu Webmaster account.
- ICP License: To host a website on Chinese servers, you need an ICP (Internet Content Provider) license issued by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This requires a Chinese business entity.
- The Great Firewall: Your website must be accessible from within China. Many international services (Google Fonts, CDNs, social widgets) are blocked, which can break your site for Chinese users.
- Content regulations: China has strict content regulations. Your website content must comply with Chinese internet laws.
- Language localization: Machine-translated Chinese content performs poorly. You need native-quality Simplified Chinese content.
