Check your AWS RDS MySQL version, you might be paying for Extended Support more than you thought.

Yes, there was an email from Amazon Web Services. They warned us that MySQL version 5.7 will be deprecated Luckilyand effectively no longer be supported.

By default all RDS instances using MySQL version 5.7 engine are switched to extended support. What they should have warned us several times is that they will charge for extended support.

Pricing is not 100% clear. It can end up costing you upwards to 30% of total RDS daily pricing. This is much more than users of AWS services usually expect.

Luckily, checking this is fairly easy in Amazon’s Cost Explorer. Once in Cost Explorer, select Relational Database Service (RDS) under Service Filter and Usage type under Group by Dimension.

Stay safe out there in the clouds!
